Safe and Sound Campaign for Children and Youth) collaborate
to strengthen Baltimore City communities through partnerships
and increased opportunities for youth. This comprehensive
leadership development program involves 40 youth and 30
community volunteers.

PARENT/COMMUNITY RESPONSE CENTER
Fulfilling a promise to improve family and community engagement in support of academic
achievement for all children, Baltimore City schools CEO Dr. Andrés Alonso and the Baltimore
City Board of School Commissioners have announced that a new Parent/Community Response
Center will open for business beginning Monday, October 22, 2007. Parents, caregivers and
members of the school community can bring school-related concerns to the immediate attention

It is being held in concert with an innovative regional housing mobility program in Baltimore that is part of a court-ordered housing desegregation remedy in Thompson v. HUD.

Mayor Dixon names 'traffic calming' task force.

The panel will study ways to slow traffic in residential areas. I know Glen residents will welcome any progress that can be made by this task force.

Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon named a task force today to study ways to slow traffic in residential areas and near schools -- part of a "traffic calming" effort that has become popular in other cities around the country.

The task force, first suggested by Northeast Baltimore City Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke last year, will look at ways to reduce speed on certain streets. Typical traffic calming methods include speed bumps, narrowed roads and traffic circles.

"The safety of pedestrians is a top priority of my administration," Dixon said in a statement. "While we must move autos efficiently through our main corridors, we must also make sure that walking and bicycling to and from work, school and play is safe and encouraged."

Similar traffic-calming initiatives have been used in cities across the country, most notably in Portland, Ore., and Cambridge, Mass.

A final report is due June 15. The task force will be chaired by Jeffrey Ratnow of Federal Hill, and Jamie Kendrick, deputy director of the department of transportation. The first meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the offices of the Baltimore City Planning Commission, 417 E. Fayette St., on the 8th floor.

No new ground rents

Good news coming out of Annapolis.

The General Assembly voted unanimously yesterday to ban the creation of new ground rents, the first step in an effort to reform a system that lawmakers say has been used to victimize homeowners in Baltimore.

Governor O'Malley had this to say about the bills:

"It's a great first step, and I look forward to working with the legislature on the remaining pieces of legislation so no one ever loses their home because of this archaic and unjust practice,"
